This project got started when I saw a question from a local lady asking for help from a seamstress. I've responded to these requests before. It's usually a quick fix. Reposition a button, let down a hem etc. This lady however said she had a friend whose 7 month old daughter was needing chemo and they couldn't find any clothing that would accommodate the Chemotherapy port. I told her I needed to think about it. I figured I'd search for the appropriate items and forward the link to her. I checked Amazon, Ebay, Etsy, Bing, Google, Pat Pat of France, and Carter's. NOPE! I couldn't find anything for babies.
A few years ago my husband had kidney failure and I had made him a sweatshirt to wear to dialysis. I installed a zipper with a nice trim. He stayed warm and the technicians loved it! So, I took that idea and played around on my sewing machine and some of my Grandson's old onesies and came up with a working pattern.
All onesies are either donated or purchased by grant monies. We always start with a brand new onesie. All onesies are washed in warm water with Dreft soap and double rinsed. Then dried in a hot dryer.
All fabrics are likewise donated or purchased with grant funds. We use 100% cotton or a cotton poly blend, tightly woven. All fabrics are washed in warm with Dreft soap. Then, dried in a hot dryer and steam pressed smooth/flat.
The first onesies had ribbon ties. So cute, just adorable and so inappropriate. Babies LOVE pulling on those ribbons, they tickle and are so reachable and so close to the port. Ribbon closures out.
What about buttons? Choking hazard! No buttons.
Our present design features either:velcro, velcro dots, sewn on snaps and pressure appliance applied snaps or Snap Tape.
Our Wonderful Onesies are washable, reusable. They can be sterilized and therefore can be shared over and over.
We will NEVER charge for a Wonderful Onesie! Childhood Cancers is one of Lions global concerns. Wonderful Onesies are our response to a common need. A Cancer Committee at a pediatric hospital has told us that this design solves 98% of the current gowning problem. 98%!
